How to play RAR video files

Sometimes video files are sent having the RAR extension. RAR is not video format. It is a compression technology to shrink and archive files. If the file is very large it is sometimes broken up into multiple files which make up a multi-volume archive.

A multi-volume archive will come with extensions like .rar, .r00, .r01, .r02 etc.

To play the video files on your computer you will need to reconstruct the archive into one video file.

A popular choice to decompress RAR files is WinRAR. However I’m going to show you how to decompress RAR files with one of my favorite tools 7-Zip.

You can download and install 7-Zip from here. One thing I really like about 7-Zip is that’s it’s FREE and open source software. It is incredibly easy to use and handles just about any type of compressed files you can throw at it including ZIP, GZIP, TAR, RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, MSI, WIM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS.

Locate the video files on your computer. In the case of multi-volume archive all you really care about is the file with the .rar extension.

RAR video files

Right click on the .rar file and select 7-zip\Extract Here. 7-Zip will begin to combine all of the smaller files into one large video file and place it into the current folder.

RAR video files

You can then play the video file with your favorite video player. if you’re having a problem playing the video, especially if you are using Windows media player you likely don’t have the right codecs installed on your computer. I recommend you download the VLC media player. It will play just about anything you throw at it.

Now, I may have missed it but does this work on Macs? Or just windows?

This RAR issue has been driving me crazy and I am so happy someone thought of redirecting us here.

Please let me know if it doesn’t work on Macs, what does?

The file I downloaded is a multi-part file, but there isn’t just one file with the .rar extension. There are 25 files that are part1, part2, etc, and they all have the .rar extension. Then there is one file that says it’s system info, and shows no extension, and one file that has the extension .sfv. How do I proceed?

to those who can’t acces the .rar file because a box pops up asking for a password. well that file is password protected. you will need to get the password from the creator of the file. if you can’t get it then your S.O.L

actualy a few playerss like bsplayer pro support playing compressed stuff without prior extracting them, since scene rules forbid any compression to be used on movie content ..so it’s actually just one big file, split in parts..just drag the first rar/zip file onto bsplayer pro (or vlc, with the right plugin installed) and it’ll play just fine..

I installed it..still i am unable to play the movie. it says ” un known code ” or cannot read the code.. i installed ” a missed call ” movie. Unable to watch it .getting the same error as before.
After installing 7-zip, it extracted the files.still the same…
