Converting Videos for IPOD

The video format an IPOD is MP4 with H264 or MPEG4 encoding. I thought it would be fun to download some home videos to the IPOD.
I downloaded the trial version of Cucusoft iPod Video Converter. The full product costs $39.95
The trial works great but leaves a watermark on the video.

I looked for a free solution to convert video for the IPOD. Here is one method that worked for me.

Step 1

Download and install Videora Converter which is a free conversion utility.
Step 2

Launch Videora and go to the Setup section. Select the desired profile and the directory you want to output the videos to.
I used H264 320×240 640 kbps. You can select a lower bitrate setting as well if you are looking to save some space.

Step 3

Go to the Convert section and click on the “Transcode New Video” button. SELECT the video file you want to convert.

Step 4

Add the video to your iTunes library

Notes

If you would like to convert home movies that are on a DVD you could download either DVDShrink or DVDFab
Once you get the DVD on your hard drive you can choose the VOB files from the VIDEO_TS folder as in Step 3 above. A VOB file is nothing more than a MPEG2 file.
If your VOB is over 1G you can join the separate VOB files into a single MPEG file using a tool like VOB2MPG.
VOB2MPG goes through a whole DVD VIDEO_TS folder and joins up the various vob sets to produce MPEGS.
